Building a Professional Architecture Portfolio with a Lightweight Custom CMS

I recently built a arhitecture portfolio for a mid sized arhitecture firm via my agency rapid.hr.

For architecture studios, a website should be more than a digital brochure. It should be a portfolio that is easy to update, fast to load, and simple to manage without relying on expensive hosting or complex content management systems.

A modern approach is to build the website as a static site while integrating a lightweight custom CMS tailored specifically to the studio's needs. This combines the speed and security of static websites with the flexibility of dynamic content management.

A Portfolio That Stays Under Your Control

Instead of requiring a developer every time a new project is completed, the integrated CMS allows the client to:

  • Add new projects
  • Edit existing portfolio entries
  • Delete outdated work
  • Upload project images
  • Update project descriptions and details
  • Organize projects into categories

The interface is designed specifically for the portfolio, avoiding the complexity of traditional CMS platforms.

Modern Cloud Infrastructure

The system uses modern serverless technologies to keep infrastructure simple and reliable.

  • Cloudflare D1 stores project information, descriptions, categories, and metadata.
  • Cloudflare R2 stores project images without traditional storage costs.
  • Integrated page functions securely process updates and publish changes without maintaining a dedicated backend server.

This architecture eliminates the need for managing databases, virtual servers, or expensive hosting environments.

Secure by Design

The administration panel is protected using Cloudflare Access, a lightweight authentication system that secures the CMS without requiring a traditional login infrastructure. Access is granted through email-based authentication, allowing only authorized users to manage website content.

By placing authentication at Cloudflare's edge, the admin interface remains protected while avoiding the complexity of managing passwords, authentication servers, or additional security plugins.

Performance First

Because the website is primarily static, every page is delivered almost instantly.

Benefits include:

  • Excellent loading speeds
  • Strong SEO performance
  • Improved Core Web Vitals
  • Better user experience across desktop and mobile devices
  • Reduced security risks compared to traditional CMS installations

Visitors experience a fast, responsive portfolio while the client enjoys a straightforward editing experience.

Lower Operating Costs

One of the biggest advantages of this architecture is its efficiency.

Since the website runs on a serverless infrastructure with static delivery, operational costs remain extremely low while still providing powerful content management capabilities. For agencies, this means maintaining client websites without the overhead of traditional hosting stacks, while clients benefit from a professional solution that scales as their portfolio grows.

A Modern Portfolio for Modern Studios

Architecture firms need websites that showcase their work without becoming another system to maintain. A static portfolio combined with a purpose-built CMS delivers the best of both worlds: exceptional performance for visitors and simple content management for the client.

The result is a professional portfolio that is fast, scalable, secure, easy to update, and cost-effective to operate for years to come.
